Feed In Tariff Review
Wed 16 Feb 2011
On 7th February Energy Secretary Chris Huhne launched the first comprehensive review of the Feed in Tariffs (FITs) scheme following growing evidence that large scale solar farms could soak up money intended to help homes, communities and small businesses generate their own electricity.
The comprehensive review will assess all aspects of the scheme including tariff levels, administration and eligibility of technologies. It is likely to focus on large scale solar projects (over 50kW) with a view to making any resulting changes to tariffs “as soon as practical”. The government has said that the tariff rates will remain unchanged until April 2012 but has left the door open to make earlier changes if the review reveals a need for greater urgency. The review will also undertake a short study into the take up of FiTs for anaerobic digestion plants where the government has been disappointed with the take up to date.
We believe this is an area which needs clarification as soon as possible to avoid creating uncertainty for developers and to enable them to take decisions on which projects to pursue.
